Air Cargo & Logistics

Canada's “Fly-by-Night” Solution

by Jamie Porteous

With the continued growth of just-in-time inventory control, the importance of air cargo continues to be heightened in corporate supply chains, where the transport of urgent materials, from medical supplies to auto or computer parts is needed. To meet these critical shipping deadlines, companies rely on courier companies, freight forwards and logistics specialists.

Although many organizations ship urgently needed products, an increasing number of Canadian companies are opting for a co-load system, a term coined by all-cargo airline Royal Cargo, which is an important partner for practically every large and small courier, as well as customers direct that do not have their own aircraft, offering guaranteed space to these organizations through co-loaded shipments.

Air cargo plays a key role to many companies involved in the logistics process, and for the automotive parts industry it can be critical to remaining competitive. Royal Cargo, which operates nightly on behalf of General Motors of Canada’s Service Parts Operation, moves parts from GM’s National Parts Distribution Centre to its regional Parts Distribution Centres across the country. Moving their parts on Royal Cargo’s overnight network in Canada allows their dealers to order parts right up to the end of the day, and have the parts delivered to them the next business day, regardless of what province they are located in.

GM’s Service Parts Operations were looking for a reliable on-time cargo network to meet their operational needs and service requirements. Royal Cargo was awarded the contract over several other airlines because of its on-time performance record and its ability to meet GM’s order response time.

In addition to assisting manufacturers in meeting supply deadlines on a scheduled basis, the airline operates charters to meet last-minute emergency needs around the world. When inventory or assembly-line shortages occur, many companies discover that it can be more economical to charter an aircraft than shut down production.

To meet these requirements, Royal Cargo maintains a 24-hours, seven-days-per-week centralized Customer Service Center located at their Cargo Movement Control facility adjacent to Toronto, Ontario’s, Pearson International Airport.

Royal Cargo is the first airline in Canada to seek ISO 9002 accreditation. This internationally accepted system of rating quality management and quality assurance is being used to ensure quality control at every step of the air cargo process.

In addition to its Canadian network, Royal Cargo offers containerized and loose cargo space on Royal Airlines passenger aircraft to more than 75 cities around the world.
